Scott Morrison’s plan to spend $600 million on the gas peaking plant in the Hunter has been powerfully debunked from all directions. The Hunter community, energy experts, economists, climate scientists, health professionals and environmentalists have all said it’s crazy. The EIS consultation received 250 public submission and only two supported it.
Yet now the plant is moving ahead in the Berejiklian government’s planning system. There are also plans for a 21 km pipeline through Newcastle suburbs to connect it to the main Newcastle to Sydney pipeline, and a 14 km storage pipeline.
Opposing gas is climate action. Two of the biggest takeaways from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s most recent report were that it is possible to avoid a global climate catastrophe, but only if governments take urgent action to reduce emissions. This means no new gas and coal and a swift transition to renewables. See Climate Council media release.
So now is the time to push our governments to listen and to raise public awareness. We oppose gas mining in the North West of NSW and we oppose the Kurri Kurri gas plant. The $600 million of public money should be spent on a just transition to renewables.
