Rallies organised and supported by the Sydney Nannas are conducted within the law. Some Nannas choose to go to other rallies where they are offered a choice between getting arrested or not.
Two Mid-coast Nannas, Dom and Helen, made a Constitutional Challenge with the support of the Environmental Defenders Office in the NSW Supreme Court in May 2023 to the repressive anti-protest laws brought in by the Perrottet government.
Activists charged under these laws faced a maximum penalty of two years in gaol and/or fines of up to $22,000. However, the judge ruled that these laws were partially invalid and the harshest elements of the legislation were struck out.
A national approach to this issue is needed as more states have introduced draconian anti-protest laws.
