It’s crazy but the NSW government has subsidized the Forestry Corporation with $29 million in the last two years so they could keep logging our native forests. (NCC research).
Will this change now we have a new government? So far the logging of precious habitat for koalas and other wildlife and rare plants is continuing as it did under the Perrottet government. Logging is continuing even inside the boundaries of the Great Koala National Park.
For the first time the Minns government is responsible for signing off on Forestry’s next 12 month plan.
Treasurer Daniel Mookhey has important decisions to make in the next fortnight. Ask him to start the transition from logging native forests in the next financial year – before it’s too late to save koalas.
You may be told we need the timber for building, but we have plantation timber for that. Already the majority of sawlogs come from plantations – and this needs to move quickly to 100%. Meanwhile nearly all the trees logged on the south coast are turned into woodchips and exported.
