Chinchilla farmers in the Western Downs of Queensland are calling on us to sign their petition to the federal government to stop a toxic coal seam gas waste dump.
The production of massive amounts of toxic salty waste laced with heavy metals and toxic chemicals is one of the big problems with coal seam gas mining – a problem with no safe solution. In Queensland the waste from 16,000 wells is sitting in huge ponds lined with plastic.
The Queensland government has approved a landfill waste dump for 15 million tonnes of the waste. Dumping the waste in landfill would be bad enough but the site of the dump is in the headwaters of the Murray Darling river system!
This is a federal matter because the health of the Basin rivers is so important to us all. Please ask the federal government to intervene now.
