When we talk to politicians they always say to keep signing petitions, writing letters and submissions, organising and going to events. That’s how MPs learn what topics are important to the us, the voters.
Some weeks there are just too many petitions to promote on Action of the Week, and this is one. Please do at least one if not all of these worthwhile actions – it won’t take you long.
Increase the Petroleum Resource Rent Tax (PRRT)
The Federal Government collects more money from students paying HECS than it does from gas companies paying the PRRT.
Australia Institute research shows that increasing the PRRT will raise billions of dollars that can be spent on essential public services and help us deal with the costs and impacts of the climate crisis, driven by our fossil gas export industry.
Support the Declaration of our Right to Protest
Sydney Knitting Nannas have endorsed the Declaration of our Right to Protest and encourage individuals to read and support it by adding your name. The Declaration is grounded in human rights law and was produced by the Human Rights Law Centre, with support from the Australian Democracy Network and in collaboration with grassroots activists and experts across the continent.
Prime Minister Albanese claims his government is committed to truth-telling and treaty. But in the same breath, he told the nation the Treaty process is the responsibility of the states. Call on the Albanese Government to fulfil their election promise for truth-telling and a Treaty, something our communities have been calling on for decades. Australia is the only Commonwealth nation that does not have a treaty with its First Nations people.
Save the Darling Baarka River
The Darling-Baaka is suffering from neglect, over-extraction, pollution and mismanagement. Fish kills are ongoing, there is not enough water for the environment, and it has come to light that experts who work for the government are routinely silenced – unable to share their science with the public. The Darling-Baaka needs decisive action from the NSW Government to restore it to health.
Whales not Woodside
Woodside is Australia’s biggest climate threat, and people need to know the truth about its operations. Greenpeace is taking Woodside to court for deceiving Australians about the impact its dirty gas is having on our climate. Tell Woodside to walk away from its destructive gas drilling project:
