The Albanese government has expressed opposition to deep sea mining for metals and has called for a moratorium on it. That’s an important step, and now it’s time to put up a fight about it.
In July the International Seabed Authority will meet to decide whether to stop this new devasting industry or unleash it to destroy our oceans. There’s a lot of work to be done in the meantime by our government and everyone who cares for the oceans.
Greenpeace is tracking moves by The Metals Company to make the oceans off the Pacific Islands their first big target for this new industry. The threats to the people of the Pacific and all our precious oceans are very real.
