This week’s Action of the Week is a ‘clickathon’ with three petitions. One is to protect the world’s oceans and two are about gas exports. These are quick actions for busy people to do on the run, anywhere at anytime.
1. Open Letter: Urgently ratify the High Seas Biodiversity Treaty
Doctors for the Environment urges the federal government to introduce legislation to ratify the High Seas Biodiversity Treaty. The bill must incorporate all of the treaty’s goals, in particular establishing marine protected areas and environmental impact assessments for planned activities on the high seas.
Make them pay
Global billionaire oil and gas corporations pay next to nothing to Australians for the resources they export overseas for record profits. Changes to the Petroleum Resource Rent Tax (PRRT) have failed to increase the taxes they pay because of ongoing loopholes.
2. Fix Australia’s gas export problem
Call on the Australian Government to:
- stop unrestricted gas exports,
- reduce Australian domestic gas prices with uncontracted gas,
- make gas exporters pay their fair share of taxes and royalties,
- approve no new gas projects.
3. Gas companies must pay tax on exports
Call on the Treasurer Jim Chalmers to raise and fix the Petroleum Resource Rent Tax for the next federal budget, so it delivers for community and the climate.
