It’s scandalous – a significant gas leak has been allowed to go on for decades, warming the planet and risking community health and safety.
Who knew? The owners of the massive gas tank knew – Santos since 2020, and the previous owner ConocoPhillips. No less than five government agencies also knew, but they decided to keep it secret from the public.
Now Santos says they won’t fix the leak because of the “disproportionate” cost to them.
Prime Minister Albanese and NT EPA chair Paul Vogel can make Santos fix the leak. Please use the NT Environment Centre draft letter to get this public health and climate threat shut down now.
PS: There was further evidence of the NT government’s captive relationship with the gas industry in an ABC report on Friday:
NT Environment Protection Authority chair Paul Vogel was involved in key decisions around the Darwin Liquefied Natural Gas plant (DLNG) without disclosing his paid role with the lobbying firm representing DLNG shareholder INPEX.
