Nannas strongly support the campaign by the Mudgee and Wollar communities to stop the expansion of the biggest operating coal mine in NSW: Moolarben OC3 coal mine expansion.
That’s why this week we are suggesting an Action of the Week that may take you a bit longer than usual – making a submission to the Independent Planning Commission (IPC). There are many reasons why this expansion should not go ahead. You don’t have to write about all of them, and you don’t need to make a long submission.
There are a few steps in the process, outlined in submission guides by Lock the Gate and the Nature Conservation Council.
You will see that Yancoal has at the last minute asked for extra time to add amendments to their proposal. Could this be about disrupting the strong community campaign and distracting us from putting in submissions? Submissions are still scheduled to close on 17 February.
Yancoal would be worried by the community campaign, and also because the NSW Department of Planning’s assessment report doesn’t make a recommendation to the IPC. This is a break from Planning’s usual practice of acknowledging coal mining harms but supporting its expansion and extension anyway.
This is not about ending coal jobs now – Moolarben already has approval to operate until 2038!
