The Minns Labor government promised to rein in land clearing prior to its election in 2023 but have not done so. Each year 84,000 ha of native species habitat is being cleared, causing huge losses to our biodiversity. The government must act before the March 2027 election to save vulnerable native species.
As an immediate first step they need to remove the made-up category “Invasive Native Species” from the Land Management Code. This category is allowing broadscale clearing of iconic native species such as the coolabah and red gum. It is not based on science and is only used in NSW.
