Nannas have been on a guided stroll down Smith’s Creek to see koalas in the wild. Campbelltown koalas are uniquely chlamydia free and the largest recovering koala population in NSW. However, they are threatened by existing housing developments and huge new developments by LendLease and other developers.
Mallaty Creek is the most direct koala corridor from the Georges River to the Nepean River. New research shows a lack of genetic diversity in this population. The planned 6 lane/40m wide transport corridor will cut through every east-west koala corridor. Koalas need all corridors protected and connected by underpasses, amidst major urban sprawl.
Koalas are being killed on major roads because speed limits are too high and because koala habitat has become disconnected by roads and development. We support Save Sydney’s Koalas and the Campbelltown Knitting Nannas who focus on protecting this precious koala colony.
