This week let’s limber up for a big community campaign in 2026 to see the end of new coal projects in NSW.
There are 18 new coal mining projects in the NSW planning system – some of them huge and proposing to extract coal for decades. The state is not on track to meet its emissions reduction targets, no big surprise when we know the Minns government has approved eight new coal projects since its election
The recent spate of extreme weather events that have caused so much suffering have made it clear: climate change is here and we need to deal with it. Step one must be to stop expanding fossil fuel mining and exports, and support communities in the transition to renewables.

Soon there will be submissions to write objecting to the next two projects being assessed: Chain Valley and Moolarben coal mines. The community‘s win in the NSW Court of Appeal against the Mt Pleasant mine and the Net Zero Commission’s Spotlight on Coal report have combined to clarify the law and strengthen the case against new coal mines. We can make this the year of a big turn to nature and a safer climate.
