Review of the Sydney CSG Rally on 14 September

Nannas participated in Lock the Gate’s review of the very successful rally against coal seam gas in NSW. The latest information on where things are up to with the Santos Narrabri Gas Project is here.

The NSW government has not yet delivered the promised Gas Roadmap for NSW. Nannas and others have been pushing the NSW government to help people get off gas inNSW, as has been done by other state governments and some local councils.

Nannas will focus on Premier Chris Minns in drawing attention to the urgent need to transition households away from gas, and also to not allow it in new building projects.  We’re thinking of writing letters about where the Gas Roadmap is up to and a knit-in at his Kogarah office with a request for a meeting about gas in NSW.

Our other local action on gas will be to provide Nannas and friends with a letter-writing guide for ratepayers to take to their councils encouraging them to incentivise households to get off gas and to stop gas connections in new builds.

Knitting Nanna on ABC Life Matters

Helen Kvelde, Mid-Coast Knitting Nanna spoke on ABC Life Matters on Monday 25 September in a program called Not just a youth movement: taking up protest in retirement.

“Taking up a cause in older age can add meaning and community to people’s lives, and be a powerful example to younger activists.” Listen here

Land and Environment Court

Nanna Bernie attended a directions hearing on the EPA vs Maules Creek Mine (Whitehaven). Whitehaven’s barrister argued that the case be dropped and the EPA pay the costs. Nannas maintain a presence at these hearings because journalists are not covering it.  We want Whitehaven to know someone is watching and we get a good response when we report it on social media. Whitehaven is in court on 16 charges, so there will be more court appearances.

New Nannas

A starter pack for new Nannas has been developed and posted on the website here with links to the Nannafesto, a video, our calendar, contacts, a short summary of major issues, our communications, and our teams. Feedback welcome.

Voice Referendum

Many Sydney Nannas are volunteering for the Yes23 campaign, handing out leaflets at polling booths up until voting closes on 14 October. Consequently most actions have been put on hold over these two crucial weeks. Here’s a link to become a volunteer.

There’s a lot of misinformation and disinformation out there but Common Cause has cautioned against ‘mythbusting’ – that is, repeating (and inadvertently reinforcing) false or misleading information in order to debunk it.

Nannas are writing

Another letter was sent to Tanya Plibersek re new coal or gas mines and expansions and asking for clarification on a climate ‘Trigger’ she mentioned in her letter to us.

Letters are being drafted to Trish Doyle and Penny Sharpe about the latest news on koalas and native forest logging.

Another letter to Chris Bowen is planned about no more fossil fuel mining assessments until the EPBC Act is fixed, and to release a version of the Office of National Intelligence Climate Risk Assessment Report. His response to our last letter did not answer the questions. The Guardian
