Highlights of a Bumper Nanna Year

2024 Highlights

It’s the season for reviewing the year that was – the public events we organised as well as those we enjoyed while working with other environmental groups.

We’ve been very happy to welcome lots of new Nannas who were able to jump into action. Our website and social media presence grew – we now have nearly 2,000 followers on X and a better idea of what we’re doing on Instagram. We’ve written more letters and submissions than in the past and learnt a lot from the process.

Many of us have travelled to support other Nanna Loops and environmental groups around the state. Here’s a quick look at some of the highlights of 2023.

January
Coonabarabran Gathering – an enchanting evening of togetherness, respect and culture

March
Sydney Knitting Nannas’ first craftivism exhibition – watch the slide show

April
No New Coal protest – Nannas joined the Rising Tide climate camp at Newcastle and the blocking of a train taking coal to the world’s biggest coal port.

May
Knitting Nannas from around NSW marched to NSW parliament to tell the pollies that their anti-protest laws criminalise the wrong people. Nanna Purl, locked in a paddy wagon, led the parade. Full story and video here and see also The People’s Court is now in session video

Knitting Nanna Conference in Newtown with over 80 Nannas and friends from all over NSW.

June
On World Environment Day some Nannas marched in the CBD while others visited ‘Big Spotty’ a tree on the South Coast.

Also in June we were inspired by a meeting in parliament house with forest protection activists from the north coast. It was a great opportunity to learn about the grassroots campaign to stop native forest logging within the boundaries of the promised Great Koala National Park.

August
Nannas played volley ball in bikinis at Manly Beach. Nannas took on Team Fossil Fools in the final.

September
Nannas had singing practice and a meeting in Customs House at Circular Quay, where we now meet in person every few weeks instead of our weekly zoom.

Sydney Stop Coal Seam Gas rally with Gomeroi people, CWA, Unions NSW, NSW Farmers and Lock the Gate. Marched from Customs House to NSW parliament house to tell the government that coal seam gas development must not be allowed to go ahead in NSW.

October
Nannas love to dress up, and were surprised (and alarmed) at how little preparation was needed to look like a zombie for the No Joy for People on a Dead Planet event. Knit-in at parliament house the same week.

November
Rising Tide Blockade of Newcastle coal port. Sydney Nannas were some of the 30 Nannas at this event.

December
COP28 protest calling for new gas and coal projects to be stopped and for a just transition to 100% renewable energy.

Christmas video making and gift making session at Customs House.
