No People on a Dead Planet Zombie March

Nannas love to dress up, not only in their Nanna gear. Many Nannas were surprised (and alarmed) at how little preparation was needed to look like a zombie this week for the No Joy People on a Dead Planet event.

Face to face Nanna meeting and Zombie Thriller Dancing

Having decided to join XR’s No Joy People on a Dead Planet twenty of us gathered to practice our singing at an in-person meeting at Customs House (Nanna HQ) instead of having a Zoom meeting last week. We had Patrick on guitar and Penny to lead and coach.

On Sunday we joined the event at Sydney Town Hall in an array of Zombie outfits – all ghastly, some more so than others.

Nannas love to dress up and here was a chance to do it differently – still drawing attention to the climate emergency. We learned Thriller Dancing the zombie way at Town Hall and then set off on city streets with a very creepy bunch of activist zombies, even Michael Jackson. Keeping up was the big challenge and not all the lurching was part of the act.

Back at Town Hall, puffed and parched Nannas had a quick drink of water before singing a couple of climate songs.

The No Joy/People on a Dead Planet banner (zoom in on this) is so detailed it belongs in a gallery. The cakes were delicious and the vibe was kind and caring. Climate action can be whacky, welcoming and fun. Thanks to XR for all your work on this event.

Knit-in for Native Forests

After many weeks of rallying outside NSW parliament to tell pollies to stop native forest logging Sydney Nannas thought it was time to do some knitting inside.

We tuned in to the Budget Estimates hearing for a bit then went to the public foyer for a short knit-in. It was all about exploring our options for speaking up for the native forests being logged, and expressing our solidarity with the community activists on the front line of protecting them.

Whitehaven Coal AGM Action

Nannas and XR gathered outside The Mint in Macquarie Street as shareholders went inside for the Whitehaven Coal AGM on Thursday. They drew attention to Whitehaven’s commitment to keeping coal burning for decades, and their long record of environmental destruction.

Inside the meeting shareholders and proxy voters, including a couple of Nannas, asked questions related to plans to grow coal investments in a climate emergency. A big proportion of shareholders don’t support the growth strategy, with 40% voting against the remuneration plan for senior managers. If 25% vote against the report next year there could be a spill of the Board. Thanks to Market Forces for their exposure of Whitehaven Coal

Knit-in at Blacktown

On Thursday Nannas showed up to support ParraCan in their efforts to have the federal government release the Office of National Intelligence (ONI) report on security and global warming.

They have been asking to meet with their federal representative, Federal Minister for Communications, Michelle Rowland, for many weeks but to no avail. Sadly the Minister’s staff branded the five people who visited her office as ”protesters” and asked them “politely” to leave. It didn’t seem polite to us – we think constituents have a right to an unclassified version of the report, or at least an explanation of why people can’t be allowed to know about the future of national security.

Mid North Coast Nannas

Last Wednesday the mid north coast community turned out in force at 7am to ensure that Forestry workers arriving to destroy compartment 14 of Pine Creek SF would be aware that the community opposes their reckless wrecking. They have no social licence to destroy our forests, critical habitat and connectivity. They have no social licence to set fire to windrows in blazing windy conditions. And the government is increasingly confronted with our resistance. Biodiversity, climate, indigenous rights, threatened species, water security – what’s the difference?
