Nanna Care for Red Rebels, visiting MPs and lots of plotting for future events were the Sydney Knitting Nannas activities last week.
Red Rebel Day of Action: Grieving for Nature Lost
It was dreadful weather on Sunday and there was a huge police presence at the Opera House.
A policewoman came into the Opera House toilets and told the Red Rebels they were not allowed to change there. The Red Rebels went out into the rain, up to the Botanical Gardens to change under some big trees.
All wearing red, with faces painted white with a big black teardrop on one cheek, the Rebels slowly came down the hill. The performance, commentary and meditation were very powerful and moving. The sky was very dramatic – black and then clear. Police seemed a bit shamefaced at end.
Nannas brought hot tea in thermoses and a good supply of Nanna Elizabeth’s biscuits for the debrief session. They went down well with the Rebels.
Visiting MPs
Sydney Nannas have been visiting their NSW MPs to see if their concerns align with ours and to build a relationship with them.
It is surprising how many politicians agree with us on many issues, and yet their parties aren’t moving nearly fast enough. One MP admitted that his family members give him trouble about not doing enough or acting fast enough on climate change.
We have learnt that there is a good bloc of Independents in the NSW parliament working on environmental issues and advocating for stronger actions in meetings with government MPs and through speeches in parliament.

Over 50 community-led events across Sydney from all aspects of the climate action ecosystem – there’s an event for everyone and most are free!
The Nature Conservation Council has an event about community organising with Bushfire Survivors and Renewables in Cobargo at the Australian Museum on 14 May 6-8pm. Other events at the Museum are Tackling Climate Change at the Australian Museum, and the film screening and Q&A of Rising Up.
