Four Sydney Nannas went on the Lock the Gate Hunter Valley Coal Tour by bus on Friday 21 June. We saw the scale of destruction and the voids to be left behind from coal mining.
Hearing from the people living in Muswellbrook and Bulga left a deep impression on us. These people have been giving their all to stop this madness.

It’s hard for them to oppose developments that feed so many people around them while witnessing the harm and destruction caused by the mines and fighting such entrenched and powerful interests. These locals need, and really appreciate our support.
We learnt a lot about
- Hunter coal mines and power stations
- How the mines have affected communities –
Day 1 Thursday – overnight in Maitland and briefing from Hunter Renewal
Day 2 Friday – Bus trip to Muswellbrook, tour of coal mines, lunch at Vines Restaurant at Hollydene Estate Winery, and Bulga for afternoon tea - Lock the Gate’s campaign against further expansions

The tour was incredibly well organised by Lock the Gate. It was seamless, and Angela kept us entirely on or ahead of schedule.
