Nannas get ready to go to Newcastle

Rising Tide Blockade 2023

Knitting Nannas from around NSW will gather at Rising Tide’s protestival on 22-24 November on Newcastle Harbour and at Camp Shortland, adjoining Horseshoe Beach.

The City of Newcastle has noted the ruling of the NSW Supreme Court last Thursday but has received independent legal advice and has confirmed that the Lord Mayor, Dr Ross Kerridge, has issued a permit for the event on its land at Camp Shortland.

This means Rising Tide’s event will run as planned.

  • Marquees and other infrastructure will be set up in the park behind Horseshoe Beach from Tuesday 19 November – Tuesday 26 November. Marquees, toilets, kitchens are good to go!
  • Camping in the park behind Horseshoe Beach

It is legal to gather on the beach and to paddle out on the harbour, staying close to shore and not enter the shipping channel. So on Friday 22 November to Sunday 24 November a peaceful, colourful flotilla intends to be out on the water.

Sydney Knitting Nannas have been preparing for the event for weeks. We practiced singing last Friday with our new speaker box playing karaoke tunes for our favorite anti-coal songs, and we all agreed we sound a lot better.

Some of us stayed on after our meeting to watch our street theatre troupe practice their climate circus acts that will be on show at Newcastle next weekend. All good Nanna fun!

On a more serious note, Hunter Nannas have organised the first aid tent with trained people volunteering their time on a roster, and a Nanna Care tent will be available to anyone in need.

The Rising Tide event promises to be the second large gathering of Nannas this year. In May over 50 Nannas were in Canberra for a Kitchen Table Cabinet at Parliament House where tea ladies from parliament house walked off the job and rushed to join the Knitting Nannas. They told us they’d had a gutful of the inaction in the parliament on climate change too.
