Nanna News 5 May 2025

Now the election is over, Nannas will be back to our usual plotting and scheming to save the planet for the kiddies.

Election 2025

Nannas have been busy in their electorates (and other marginal seats) supporting candidates who are standing up for the climate, land, water and biodiversity. Unfortunately, Nannas witnessed some ugly behaviour and, along with others, have made complaints to the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC).

Waste

The NSW government’s Energy from Waste options paper has sparked strong reactions from the regional communities which may become precincts for toxic incinerator developments. Submissions are open to the public until Friday, 16 May and relevant research and information is being shared between targeted communities.

There is a new group called Parkes Clean Energy Future Alliance, which recently hosted a webinar with long-term campaigners Jane Bremmer of Zero Waste Oz and Chris Hanson of No More Incinerators. The webinar was recorded and linked to the Alliance’s website, which has lots of other information.

Nannas will be making a submission about why waste incineration should be banned in NSW, and also drawing attention to the short and long-term alternatives. We hope you’ll make one too.

Fresh Produce Survey

The Australian Marine Conservation Society, in partnership with the Boomerang Alliance, published an annual report on how supermarkets are performing when it comes to packaging. A team of Plastic Investigators surveyed local supermarkets – including Coles, Woolworths, ALDI and now IGA/Metcash – to check what’s really happening on the shelves.

In 2024, the Plastic Investigators found that in 73% of cases, loose fresh produce was more expensive than the same items wrapped in plastic.

Online Citizen Assembly – Conversations at the Crossroads

Nanna Gill recently attended the three sessions in a pilot project on deliberative democracy. The brief given to the groups of citizens taking part was to consider the proposal of the coalition parties to build seven nuclear power plants. The Assembly used Stanford University software designed for citizen’s democracy activities. Nanna Gill reported that there was a wide range of voices, none in favour of nuclear. “I would take part again”, said Nanna Gill. Conversation at the Crossroads
