Nanna News 2 Feb 2026

Nannas had their first in-person meeting in 2026 on Friday 29 January and welcomed five new Nannas. The end of fossil fuels is near but not coming nearly fast enough to save us from prolonged heatwaves.

Nannas will not stop working for an end to fossil fuel exports, and that means no new coal and gas.

On 26 January there were lots of Sydney Nannas at the Invasion Day rally in Hyde Park. The crowd was so big that it took us a while to find one another and settle in to hear the strong speeches by First Nations people from different parts of the country.

The rally was organised by Blak Caucus, whose members stressed that January 26 is a Day of Mourning for Aboriginal and Torres Strait people. It is also a day to come together against racist violence, deaths in custody and to call for land rights and self-determination.

Some of the Nannas favourite quotes from the speakers are: “A struggle grounded in love and respect for humanity and the planet”, Lynda-June Coe and “Truth hurts but it also heals”, Lizzie Jarrett.

A huge crowd marched from Hyde Park to the Yarbun Festival in Victoria Park – some Nannas made the distance, others thought it was best to quit at Central and head home.

Nannas were not the only craftivists walking with mourning First Nations people: Crocheting Queers member, Margaret, made this beautiful banner for Invasion Day.

Nannas joined Market Forces and Extinction Rebellion (XR) members outside Citibank HQ to leaflet passers-by with options to change their bank.

Sweltering Cities is collecting data to help us understand how heatwaves impact various people across Australia. They gather ideas from different communities on how to make suburbs cooler, homes safer and what extra support is needed during heatwaves. Moolarben, Mudgee Update
A recording of the Nature Conservation Council’s (NCC) submission-writing workshop has been added to our Nanna post on the Moolarben coal expansion near Mudgee.

You will also find lots of information about the project, what it will do to the environment, submission guides, video of a submission writing webinar, a 20-minute video about the area and forthcoming events. Submissions close 17 February.

The Independent Planning Commission public hearing has been postponed. See the link above.

Chain Valley near Lake Macquarie
On the Central Coast, Chain Valley is NSW’s third highest emitting coal mine. Delta Energy wants to consolidate Chain Valley operations with neighbouring Mannering Coal Mine and extend operations for two more years, going deeper under Lake Macquarie and pumping an extra 25 million tonnes of additional CO2 emissions into our atmosphere.

Read NCC’s submission guide to find out how you can make a submission to object to the Chain Valley Colliery Consolidation Project before Thursday 26th February. You can also register before 5th February to speak directly to the Commission at the public hearing on the Central Coast on 19th February.

2026 Tour Down Under

Adelaide was once again the host city for the first cycle race of the UCI World Tour season, the 2026 Tour Down Under (TDU). It will be remembered as a Tour marked by extreme fire danger and dangerous heat. Unfortunately, the TDU is still sponsored by Santos, a major gas producer!

Look at this reel by Conservation SA about the corporate greenwashing at ‘Santos’ ‘backyard’ at the TDU village in Adelaide!

Conservation SA and Extinction Rebellion SA have organised protests, and lots of people are supportive of the movement to ban fossil fuel sponsorships, including cyclists, fans and spectators.

Heat training for competitors is now essential as temperatures soar, endangering both athletes and spectators.
