Media Release: Emergency Climate Rally

No new coal and gas. 43% emissions cut by 2030 is not enough!
SUNDAY 7 AUGUST 1pm SYDNEY TOWN HALL

A protest this Sunday 7 August, organised by over thirty environment, union and community groups is calling for an immediate stop to the huge expansion of fossil fuel mining planned across Australia. The rally is demanding First Nations justice, 100% publicly owned renewable energy by 2030, an end to anti-protest laws and the logging of native forests.

The action comes on the back of communities hit by droughts, massive bushfires and floods. These extreme weather events are caused by the mining of fossil fuels and carbon-intensive production in the agriculture, transport, infrastructure and military sectors. Global warming is here and we need to act now.

Climate scientists are clear that we need to stop warming at 1.5 degrees and reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050. So the federal government’s target of 43% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 is clearly not enough. Moreover, with 114 new coal and gas projects in the planning process, most of them seeking to continue mining for 20 years or more, the paltry 43% is unlikely to be reached.

The Climate Clock is ticking and without serious climate action in the next 7 years we will lose our opportunity to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees – the level at which future generations would inherit a liveable planet.
