Nannas are back

Sydney Nannas are back in action, plotting and planning events and supporting others. We realised at our first Zoom meeting of the year that there’s a lot to keep us busy in 2024.

Logging

Outside Forestry Corp Coffs Harbour
Sydney Nanna joins Coffs Harbour Nannas at their weekly Friday Protest.

On 10 January we saw rejection in the Federal Court of the North East Forest Alliance case arguing that the renewal of regional forestry agreements based on old environmental assessments made them invalid. The judge made it clear that changing the agreements requires political action, not legal arguments.  Nannas acknowledge the work of NEFA and the EDO in bringing forward the case, and share the disappointment of forest protectors in the judgement.

Nannas plan to campaign for a full review of the system and a detailed report on the health of our forests and their environment. We will lobby for a moratorium on all native forest logging while the review is undertaken and until the Great Koala National Park is declared. We take some hope from the Federal Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek’s commitment to ensure that regional forest agreements are covered in new national environment standards in the rewritten version of the Environmental Protection Biodiversity Conservation Act.

Coal Watch

The Department of Planning recommended to its own deputy secretary to approve Boggabri Mod 8 coal mine extension on 22 December. There will be no independent approval process which the Minns Government promised during the lead up to the last state election. This is the first of at least 14 new NSW coal projects expected to be determined by the State Government in the next 18 months. Lock the Gate media

Sydney Nannas will continue to work with Lock the Gate’s Coal Watch to campaign against approvals for new coal mines and extensions.

Regional Events

Sydney Nannas plan to attend the following events. You may need to book ahead and secure accommodation for these events. See our  new calendar for more information.

Thursday 25 Jan – Newcastle Court
The remaining Rising Tide Blockaders of the Port of Newcastle are in court. Supporters are asked to be there by 8.30am. Court opens at 9.30am.

On January 11 most of the climate protesters faced court over the November 2023 Rising Tide Blockade. The Magistrate described them as “valuable contributors to society, persons who are intelligent … and making a real contribution to society.” The protesters were not convicted or fined, as the Magistrate said “they had shown good character”. Wow!!!  ABC News

Police are out of step with the community and the courts. Some older women did eight hours in lock up, and the police prosecutor apparently recommended that that time be taken into consideration in lieu of fines.

Friday – Sunday 9 – 11 February – Rising Tide Retreat near Gosford

Wednesday 20 March – Climate Integrity Summit in Canberra –  Tickets here
