Nannas had an extra Zoom meeting this week to discuss events planned for this year. Our Crafty Nannas have also met up to discuss future projects. It’s shaping up to be a big year for us.
Craft Get Together
Crafty Nannas met on Saturday 20 January. These are not structured meetings with agendas but rather a time to catch up, get to know new or would-be members, eat, be merry and allow the exchange of information and skills to flow as they will.
On this occasion there were eight of us including Iselin, just arrived from Norway who is in Sydney to do research for her Masters in Social Anthropology about knitting and the political fight for the environment. We were pleased to be able to provide her with a welcome on her first day here.
Everyone had brought some craft activity and we settled around the room and discussed who had been where, and the state of Koala issues. Bronwyn had cardboard and was working on her next witty signs.
We noted that plastic and waste are two linked significant issues and brainstormed how we might highlight them with our crafts. We came up with ways to add some visual and kinetic support to a person speaking about the issues. This is craftivism: discussion, sharing skills and support and working out a path forward consistent with our resources and craft skills.
We also talked about yarn bombing and wrapping. We think the Crochet Coral Reef project is amazing but not our key focus and perhaps requiring too much of too few with the skill to do it.
Atlas Network
Last week we released information on the Atlas Network and it has created a lot of interest. We need to work on how to combat the Network’s influence.
First we have to create awareness of what they do and how they do it. Now that we know about it we can easily spot people and organisations that are involved. It all sounds very nice but you must look deeper to see the problems. Please share our article.
Sydney Events
Nannas have had a special Zoom meeting on planning events and lots of good suggestions were made. The following dates have been set. For more details see our Events Calendar.
Wednesday 24 January – Climate Coalition meeting
Redfern Town Hall, small meeting room upstairs. Two Nannas will represent us at this meeting and all are welcome.
Friday 26 January – Invasion/Australia Day
Nannas are marching from Belmore Park to Victoria Park for the Yabun Festival. Meet at Eddy Avenue end of Belmore Park, 10 am.
Welcome Back NSW Parliament. 6-8 February – Tuesday – Thursday
We are organising an event, most probably Wednesday 7 February to Welcome back NSW Pollies. Key things we want to focus on at the Welcome are:
- Stopping native forest logging in NSW
- Expansion of coal mining in NSW – 14 new mine extensions coming through the planning system
- Disclose Pilliga Gas fire damage
- Offshore gas project PEP 11- still on the table
Friday 16 February – Face to Face Meeting at Customs House
New group photo for social media – make sure you have your t-shirts plus hats, or whatever, handy.

Thursday 25 January – Rising Tide Blockaders in Newcastle Court
Some of the protesters were in court on January 11 and they were not fined. A different magistrate will preside this week.
