The Rising Tide organisers have worked tirelessly to make the Protestival safe and non-violent. The focus is on how fossil fuel infrastructure, its funders and political enablers are driving the climate crisis. The atmosphere is friendly, peaceful and fun.
The Protestival is based at Foreshore Park in Newcastle. The area is much bigger than where the event was held last year. Even so, the designated camp ground is packed and some of the Nannas have sought more comfortable accommodation. More people are expected to arrive on Saturday.
Ships are still entering the harbour. The police have put out yellow buoys in the harbour and are warning people with loud hailers that anyone leaving the area when a ship enters the harbour will be subject to the protest laws.
On Thursday about a dozen kayaks and small boats remained on the harbour as two tug boats escorted a large bulk carrier into the port. Police in boats and on jetskis ushered the protesters away from the ship and no arrests were made.
Nannas from Albury to Lismore in NSW and from Western Australia have arrived in Newcastle and more are expected on Saturday.
Nanna Care is busy handing out hair ties and sunblock as the days have been very sunny. Nannas in the Nannadome are having lots of chats with new and old members.
Nannas have caught up with lots of friends at the event, including Sue Higginson MLC from Lismore and Bev Smiles from Mudgee Coal Alert and Inland Rivers. Bev was a contributor to a new report Community Sacrifice for Coal and Gas which was launched at the NSW Parliament on 13 November.
The School Strikers marched in central Newcastle on Friday with the banner “Ignore us at our peril” before walking down to the Protestival. It’s reassuring to know that these marvellous young people will ensure the planet is in good hands in the future
The entertainment on the main stage is fantastic, and there is plenty to do with workshops happening all over the site.
The mainstream media is giving this event the publicity we could only dream about thanks to the Minns government trying to stop it. The huge media tent is pumping out stories and there are plenty.
