Rising Tide Blockade Day 2

Friday 28 November: Nannas Alex and Gemma do kayak safety training on the beach in preparation for the weekend flotillas!

This was a Nanna and Goliath moment at Rising Tide. A Nanna spots a huge coal ship and a police boat through a coal pollution haze.

Knitting Nannas met many people from Newcastle and beyond on our second day at the Protestival. We had lots of conversations with people young and old who wanted to find out more about what is happening with gas in their state. They are shocked when we explain about the Narrabri Gas project, the pipelines and the consequences of what will happen if this goes ahead.

Anyone interested in writing a submission was offered a seat in the shade. They were really interested to learn and do more. They either wrote a submission on the spot or gave us their contact details for us to follow up with emails with more information.

Nanna Kathy was delighted to welcome journalist and Nanna favourite Wendy Bacon to have her say on the Narrabri Lateral Pipeline. Wendy has been following the Narrabri Gas Project for many years.

“If we stop the pipeline we stop the gas and save the Pilliga forest,” said Nanna Louise.

Nannas Louise and Anne visited the Bob Brown Foundation rainforest tent. “Absolutely gorgeous,” said Nanna Anne.

The whole event has the same vibe as previous years. We are surrounded by like-minded, friendly people wanting to learn more about how to protect the environment.

The space is better organised, with the main stage moved to make more space for camping. Nannas have been to many of the workshops and talks and found they have learnt a lot. They have much to reflect on over the coming days. These cerebral events have been balanced with music, dancing and delicious food.

Today stronger winds are forecast so we’ll be holding onto our hats.
