Statement on Bondi Terror Attack

Sydney Knitting Nannas are shocked and distressed by the horrific, violent attacks on those gathered to celebrate Hanukkah at Bondi Beach on Sunday evening.

We send our thoughts and compassion to the families and friends of the people so mercilessly murdered, and to the many people injured and suffering distress.

This was a senseless act of antisemitic violence, which has broad-reaching implications for the Jewish community, the city of Sydney and everyone in Australia, regardless of faith. This is a time for us to resist all attempts to isolate communities and to champion more than ever Australian values of togetherness, community and multiculturalism.

We are following the commentary in the aftermath of the shootings – even though it’s difficult because of the horror and sadness we feel, and the volume of information and misinformation now filling the media. For Nannas, it is a time for carefully checking sources, following credible information, and considering what will help our society to heal and move forward.

Nannas will work for peace and community healing and we send our care and support to all of you who are doing the same. Take care of yourselves and each other.
