Nannas continue to protest the introduction of Energy from Waste incinerators in NSW. Last week we also wrote submissions, and prepared for major events with other climate action groups. We hope you can help us promote them.
Management and Resource Recovery Conference
Sydney Nannas joined Nannas from Lithgow, members of No More Incinerators Eastern Suburbs and Greens MP Sue Higginson outside the Conference at Moore Park on Wednesday. The purpose of the conference was to promote waste incineration, or as the industry calls it ”Energy from Waste”.
Incineration is not part of the solution to the looming waste crisis. It’s the most expensive and polluting option and it would work against safer more effective ways to manage our residual waste.
Waste incinerators
- Destroy finite resources that the recycling, reuse and composting sector desperately needs as the backbone of a Circular Economy.
- Support an unsustainable linear economy, relying heavily on fossil fuel based materials such as plastic.
- Create deadly pollution including Dioxin, Mercury, PFAS and microplastics.
- Exceed emissions of fossil fuel plants per unit of energy produced.
The previous NSW government approved a plan which would allow incineration plants to be developed in or near regional towns. A E-petition has been developed by community campaigners calling on the lower house of NSW parliament to put a moratorium on current projects and ban energy from waste projects in NSW. The petition closes on 16 January 2024.

Future Gas Strategy – The gas companies have not persuaded the public that gas is good for jobs, energy prices, lowering emissions or the economy. Gas companies pay little or no tax or royalties and it drives up the exchange rate, making it hard for other exporters. So their latest tactic is to say that phasing out gas would threaten security, in other words fear. But if gas is phased out it will not cause conflict and regional instability as claimed. We’ve stopped exports before – whale oil and asbestos – and no war occurred. Submissions close 13 November.

Thursday 9 November – NSW Coal Watch Online Launch
5.30pm – The NSW government’s new climate Bill will do almost nothing to address the 12 proposed massive expansion of coal mines. The lifecycle emissions from these expansions will be 15 times the total annual emissions currently released in NSW.

NSW Teachers Federation, 37 Reservoir Street, Surry Hills, and online via Zoom. AGM from 9-12 noon, then an address at 12.25pm by Environment Minister Penny Sharpe. After lunch conference sessions and workshops. Joslyn van der Moole from South Coast will be speaking at conference on a panel about native forest logging.

Help needed to promote major climate events
Nanna Marie attended a Sydney Climate Coalition meeting on Wednesday 1 November at Redfern Town Hall. The coalition is involved in the organization of two major climate events in Sydney.
Promoting both events widely is key to getting a large crowd so we are asking you to help. Please adapt the following text and send to your friends and other groups you are involved with.
The Sydney Climate Coalition is currently organising towards a major climate justice demonstration on Saturday December 2, to mark the 28th United Nations COP summit.
We are also supporting School Strike for Climate in Sydney, who are supporting a national strike day on Friday November 17 just prior to the start of COP.
Both rallies will put forward the same demands on the Federal and State Labor governments – we need an urgent change of course from continued expansion of the fossil fuel industry and we need commitments of large-scale public funding to drive a rapid and just transition to renewable energy.
2023 has already been a year of unprecedented temperatures and climate disasters worldwide. Here in Australia we face another devastating summer of fires and extreme heat.
We request that your organisation endorse both the November 17 School Strike and the December 2 COP28 rally. Please share promotional materials widely and encourage your supporters to attend.
We will not sit by while our future is burned for the profits of the fossil fuel industry.
