This week a letter from the Sydney Knitting Nannas was sent to Paul Scully, NSW Minister for Planning and Public Spaces with copies to both state and federal Environment Ministers about approvals for new coal mines and expansions, and Australia’s responsibility for Scope 3 emissions.

Busy Nanna Week
This was an exceptionally busy week for Nannas with three fossil fuel protests on successive days in Sydney and a court case involving Nannas in Newcastle. With a growing number of Nannas the load is spread with a different group rallying for each event.

Object to coal approval
Bad news this week. The Albanese government has approved the Isaac River coal mine in Queensland, their first approval of a new coal mine.

The Australia Institute’s Coal Mine Tracker details the coal mines and extensions in the planning system. The tracker has information on where the projects are in the planning process, their total and annual emissions as well as the endangered plant and animal species they threaten.
